Emergency Dental Guide: What to Do During a Severe Toothache, Broken Tooth, or Bleeding Gums

By Dr. Manorama Vijay Singh | Muskurahat Dental Studio

What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies can strike at any hour. Knowing how to react in the first 30 minutes following a dental injury often determines whether a natural tooth can be saved.

First-Aid Actions for Common Dental Emergencies

1. Severe Throbbing Toothache

Rinse mouth with warm salt water. Gently use dental floss to remove trapped food particles. Do NOT apply aspirin directly to the gum tissue. Call our emergency helpline immediately.

2. Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown (do NOT touch the root). Rinse gently in cold water without scrubbing. Place tooth back in socket or keep it submerged in a cup of cold milk. Visit our clinic within 60 minutes for re-implantation.

3. Chipped or Fractured Tooth

Save any broken tooth fragments. Rinse mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to your cheek to control facial swelling.
